Hrithik Roshan - 'KMG Wouldn't Have Been Possible Minus Suzanne!'

He's back in the reckoning after being written off as the millennium version of Kumar Gaurav.
With Koi.. Mil Gaya, Hrithik Roshan has not only resurrected his box-office status that his debut film as hero, Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai had given him, but also proved that as an actor, he was simply the best from the post - Ajay Devgan generation.
On the personal front Hrithik broke many a hearts when he announced his marriage to Suzanne. Industry pundits too predicted doom saying the 'married' image would work to his detriment. But Hrithik proved them wrong as he received some very good offers as well as partial success after having sacrificed his bachelorhood.
Today Suzanne and Hrithik are the ideal couple. Very much in love and completely in-sync with each other. We spoke to him about life after marriage.
Excerpts from an interview:
You have proved all over again that Hindi film heroes have their best phase after marriage.
Yeah, I am overjoyed by the success of Koi.. Mil Gaya. It's been overwhelming, beyond expectations. The industry has gone out of the way to call up and shower praises on dad and me. Personally, I am a much relieved man, and I am very thankful to God. All this has reaffirmed my belief in hard work. It has convinced me all over again that an equation exists between hard work and success. If Koi... Mil Gaya had not worked I would not have found the motivation to excel in my future films.
How did you delineate Rohit? Was there research of any kind involved to portray his mental backwardness?
I looked deep inside me for Rohit. A child like Rohit exists or has existed in all of us. We have all experienced moments when we have felt horribly embarrassed or inadequate as kids, or have been made fun of and suffered.
I booked a hotel room and locked myself in for three days with a copy of the script. And a lot of Rohit just evolved from my childhood. I would even say that he was an extension of my childhood. I too had been a loner, and was laughed at because I was an oddity too in my way with my six fingers, my tendency to stutter and my shyness. I never felt like a normal child. I had many heartbreaking moments of the kind Rohit did, and virtually never went to sleep without crying.
Tell us something about life after marriage.
Oh, marriage is one of the best things that has happened in my life! Right now, I can't imagine how I could have lived without Suzanne. She's so inspiring too - and in many ways that I can't really explain, KMG would not have been possible without her.
Suzanne brings out the child in me, and we have so much fun together. It's crazy but when the two of us are alone in a room, she starts jumping around like mad and I join her too! I remember the time that I returned after a bad day. She was hiding behind our bedroom door and jumped out at me with a yell. The entire tension and bad mood just defused in an instant, and I was normal again, the bad day forgotten.
I am shooting for Lakshya now in far-off Ladakh, and though Suzanne cannot be with me all the time during this two-month schedule, I look forward to the trips that she makes off and on so that we can be together for a while.
What according to you makes a happy marriage?
I need my breathing space very badly. And thankfully, Suzanne knows this side of me very well, so she lets me have my time with myself whenever I want to. If I want to be alone, she leaves me for an hour or so.
I really need to be by myself sometimes. I am working amongst people all day, people and more people...
I sit in my car and there are people. I can't even take a drive on my own because I have guards. So at times, I come home just wanting to be alone and Suzanne lets me have that. She understands and respects my need. I think that's a big step to a happily married life. That a couple understands each other completely. |
