Dolly Thakore: The world is a stage...

Would she marry again?

"Never, I am too selfish now and set in my ways," she says but is quick to clarify, "I am not lonely. My schedule is too full to think about myself. And for me now to share the intimate part of me could be tough," she feels. She hasn't ruled out the possibility. "Well, never say never," she jokes. "But on a serious note I was 38 years old when Alyque walked out and that is the time the woman's libido is in its prime. And it took me 10 years to recover before I could pursue any other relationship. And as one gets older the limits are also imposed by one. You become more selective and more cautious."

She believes society has changed for the better though. "Today's 60s is yesterday's 40. Today Indian and women of Indian origin are more consummate as a whole. Women are better dressed. They are more aware, well-traveled, well-toned, and have solid careers in addition to a more equitable marriage than women of my generation."

She observes women in India may have taken strides with their Western sisters to keep pace with changes in our society and culture, but we are Indian at heart. When reminded that Ted Turner, the CNN founder and legendary philanthropist billionaire, married Jane Fonda when she was 65, Thakore pooh-poohed the notion. "Well I can't speak for Ted, but Jane is truly a marvelous human being. We took to each other immediately and we walked hand-in-hand through out her stay in India like women in Europe do," remembers the star.

So what are the qualities she admires in women? "I think women who are confident in themselves and don't play games. The ones that have a wander-lust are open-hearted and embrace life." She pauses for a moment before continuing, "But you don't need me to say that… these women radiate their own inner light."

What she abhors? "Falsehood and fickleness," she says matter-of-factly.

So are the autumn years the best phase in her life. "I would be lying if I said they were," admits the star candidly. "I think as you age opportunities lessen. And all the men are looking at younger women, as young as 15-17 years. There are less jobs etc… But that doesn't diminish the importance and place of elderly women in our society."

She sums it up, "Its tough being a part of the finer sex, but an aging woman really needs the temerity to continue and make a difference to others but more importantly to herself."

Any advice to NRI women aging outside of India? "I think it's easy to reminisce about a time and a country you've left behind, but most NRIs know when you return you return to two Indias - the modern and the one frozen in time. In the same breath you cannot hold on to sentiments. You have to move forward and re-invent yourself and find the wanderlust which piques your senses and keeps your heart and soul alive." She also believes, "Women survive despite all the maneuverings of men and the loss of opportunity due to economic hardships."

A woman she admires? "Well I don't have any celebrity living or dead on my list that I admire," she says. "I do admire my 81 year old aunt who is a teacher and lives in Mumbai. She is unmarried and a wonderful human being. She has an enthusiasm and zest for living still. She reads the paper each day, knows the cricket scores, and knows how to prepare an epicurean feast."

Her elixir of youth? "Nothing frightens me - accident or death. I do what I do. I believe what I believe. I am."

  • Thakore was the casting director for the Academy Award winning film Gandhi back in 1982 where she was also responsible for recruiting the Indian actors in the film and for some of the PR work on the film.
  • In 1997 she was the casting assistant for the film Sixth Happiness.
  • In 2006 she starred in the TV series Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka
  • Currently seen in the long running women orientated play The Vagina Monologues in India
