Dolly Thakore: The world is a stage...
|
Meet a true Woman of Substance - theatre / film actress Dolly Thakore
''Nothing frightens me accident or death. I do what I do. I believe what I believe. I am.'' (Dolly Thakore)
The year was 1987 and Dolly Thakore felt, ''I couldn't even ask God for help. I felt like I was drowning...'' Her husband at the time and father of her son, Alyque Padamsee had just walked out of her life and into the heart of theatre actress and pop icon Sharon Prabharkor.
''Yes the time was tough. I cried, and I cried some more. I didn't have a penny and my son and I needed to survive,'' remembers the feisty 65 year old stage / film actress. She wasn't mad. ''No, I wasn't angry. But in all honesty, I was extremely sad,'' she pauses,'' An empty sad.''
It's been 10 years and this woman of substance has shown that not only can she survive but she can succeed where all others have failed. She credits this to her system of unfailing belief in herself and her family and close friends. ShaadiTimes caught up with star recently in Mumbai and had a one on one with articulate, endearing, humorous and evergreen actress.
Currently seen on the stage in The Vagina Monologues Dolly says, ''I am very grateful for what I have achieved. I am one of the lucky ones to still reach the stage. I think heart-break can pass, but you need the wherewithal within you to withstand what life throws your way.'' Today the diminutive star (she stands at 5'3'' tall) illuminates her larger than life avatar on stage through the various characters essayed in her career.
She can now also boast of a successful friendship with her ex-husband Alyque Padamsee. ''We share many interests and passions excluding our child,'' says the star. She was recently seen walking with Padamsee at the Protest March following the recent terror attacks in Mumbai.
"You don't know what life is about until a tragedy strikes in any form," believes the star. She recently had a loss in her own family - the death of her sister's son, an architect based in Chicago, who died last month by drowning in the Michigan Lake. "He was Harvard educated, a wonderful soul, an achiever and was also working on the Dharavi slum project. It's been tragic for our family and it will take us a long time to heal."
At 65 years, the snowy haired Dolly radiates with poise and confidence. "I am 65 years young," she quips and adds, "I have the energy of a 40 year old." And she credits all this to her ability to focus on the larger picture despite the trivialities in her intimate relationships which were not in her control. "It's tough to keep focused when you feel the world should be crying with you and for you. It's hard to find the confidence to keep trying when doors just don't seem open," she reminisces. "But I persevered, and I still do the six hundred things in one day that I did when I was younger," she says.
"People spend time bitching about constructive time. I am a Page Three star today, but that is just an iota of the hard work and long grueling hours of practice and rehearsals. I was lucky to have survived the politics, and have managed to get work in spite of all the jealousies, envy, and increasing competition in the industry," she says and continues. "What you see on Page Three is years of unrecognized work finally getting applauded. Youngsters today want a short-cut to fame and fortune. Many don't realize the work ethic that goes into reaching fame and stardom including much heartbreak and loneliness," laments the star.
