Deepika Govind- An Eco Friendly Designer
|
We have seen designers and we have heard of environmentalists. But seldom have we seen the twain meet. Meet Deepika Govind, the exception. This is for the second consecutive year that she has presented us with a green and eco-friendly collection.
By no means didactic, the show had a lot more to offer than leafy outfits. There was a well-choreographed ramp walk and a theatre to add to it with a live violin played by Manoj and theatrical recordings by French poet and filmmaker Alain Andre.
She provided the statement 'go green' last year at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week. Deepika goes the same path this year, exploring myriad ways to express her thoughts on environmental safety through her collection. With her show Send My Roots Rain - An Eco Theatre this time round, Deepika has chosen a collection to answer her inner conscience and come up with a collection that projects her sensitivity.
Aptly named Send My Roots Rain is a 40-piece collection divided in two - Soulscapes and Mindscapes. It was a collection highlighting the global crisis and an appeal to everyone to do their bit. She has had many breakthroughs in the past with fabric development like blending khadi silk and tencel, which is a man made fibre that makes khadi stronger.
We spoke to the designer about her two fascinations - environment and fashion.
What kind of colours and fabrics have you used?
Colours like mint, burnt, orange and mustard shades in Soulscapes. Midnight blue, vermillion, geranium, red and black in Mindscapes. In fabrics, I have used eco-friendly fibres soya bean and bamboo lycra along with satin silk lycra and organza.
What do you think about the venue?
Initially I was apprehensive but I think everything has been really smooth. It's nice and easy and stalls are easily accessible.
What is the USP of your collection?
The use of innovative fabrics with unique cuts and colours. Indian crafting with a contemporary edge in all the designs. The silhouettes are organic with interplay of fabrics, colours and textures.
What was your inspiration behind the concept?
This concept came out because of three reasons. Firstly, earth needs to respire. Secondly, it's our culture to make brand India really big. And lastly, a future of a child to live in a non-toxic environment.
Tell us about Soulscapes and Mindscapes, the two parts of your collection.
Soulscapes represent the people who live by heart and mindscapes represent the people who think science is the solution for everything. They are the opposite of each other and represent that life is full of contradictions. In soulscapes the ikat represents the influence of organics and is close to the nature whereas mindscapes includes bold strokes.
You had a dramatic choreography with the theatre effect?
It was not about dramatics but about putting my show right and letting people know what I feel.
You have used your collection as a platform to create awareness about the cause. Why?
You can't have a better platform than this. As designers we also have a responsibility with the kind of fabric we use.
Your statement was to go green and using eco-friendly products. Would you like to say anything something about it?
Yes, we should make little efforts to make our environment better and have a little sensitivity to the fact that earth is going to die if we continue like that. So each one of us should do our bit. Science gives you solutions but then we should think about the environment also.
