Straight From the Heart

Bobby Deol InterviewThis younger Deol (Bollywood veteran actor Dharmendra's son and star Sunny Deol's younger brother) started off his Bollywood journey in 1995 with Rajkumar Santoshi's successful Barsaat for which he also won the Filmfare Best Debutant Award. He then moved on to do films like Gupt: The Hidden Truth (1997), Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya (1997), Kareeb (1998), Soldier (1998), Ajnabee (2001) and Humraaz (2002), to name a few. His first three films did pretty well but the rest of them failed to make an impact at the box office. Ask him about his patchy career and he candidly admits, “I don't want to blame anybody. I made wrong choices, as I was just a beginner. But, I believe there's always a good and bad day in everyone's life and I do not like to think about what went wrong in the past. I still have a long way to go.” Here's actor Bobby Deol on his career, belonging to a filmi family and more...

  • Coming from an acting background, did you always want to be an actor?
I always knew I wanted to be an actor and it was easy for me to get a break in Bollywood because of my dad. But once you enter the industry, I think it’s your work that speaks for you. You really need to be able to sustain in the industry. Only if you’re a good actor, directors would want to work with you. And I’ve been in this industry for the last 15 years. Definitely, there have been ups and downs but I believe there’s always a good and bad day in your life. So, I don't like to look back and feel sad about the mistakes I’ve made in the past.

  • What was it like to grow up as a superstar’s son?
I was never made to feel that way. Even in real life my dad was a superstar for me. I never thought of him as an actor. He was like my superman. I don’t remember if he ever refused to give me something I asked for. He’s the best!

  • What kind of relation do you share with your dad, brother and sisters – Esha and Ahana?
We all live together and we’re a very emotional family. I think I’m very blessed to have been born in a star-studded family with talented actors. But, yes I’m quite close to Sunny bhaiya. He’s the best brother in the world and he's extremely caring and loving.

  • At any point of time did you feel insecure while shooting for Yamla Pagla Deewana, since you also had your dad and brother in the film?
No way! This is the best thing that could ever happen to me. In fact, it was great fun working with them. The comfort level was so high that I had absolutely nothing to worry about. I just tried my level best to put in my heart and soul into the film to make it work. I wanted this film to be a hit, because I knew there could be nothing better than this as a gift for my dad on his 75th birthday last year.

  • The three of you were also there in Apne. What do you think went wrong then?
The film was never a flop. It did well and the audience appreciated it. I agree, it wasn’t as big a hit as Yamla Pagla Deewana, but I think that’s because the Indian audience prefers comedy over any other genre. If they’re spending money after tickets, they prefer to be entertained, instead of feeling sad. But, Apne had scenes that people could relate to. It had everthing in it, including family, values and relationships.

  • You’ve tried playing different genres in the last 15 years of your career. Which one has been the most challenging role of all?
I’ve tried various genres but I believe the audience has liked me more in a comedy role, so I think I should do more of it. As far as playing a challenging role goes, I wouldn’t call any of it challenging. That’s yet to come. I’m comfortable doing any kind of role, be it action, a rom-com, thriller, etc. I know I can play any kind of role as long as it’s written well. You can be a great actor, but if you’re not given a good script it won’t work for you. So, all that matters is a great script of any genre and a great director.

  • How have you evolved as an actor over the years?
You learn every day. I’ve been around for 15 years and if I haven’t evolved then I think I’m really stupid and dumb. But I don’t think that’s the case. As an actor I’ve experienced so many different things in life. I meet up with new people almost every day, you exchange thoughts, you learn certain things from certain people, etc. So, every day is a learning process. But yes, I still have a long way to go.

  • What do you look for in a new project before signing it?
The script, definitely! I like doing different kind of films, which I’ve already done so far. I went wrong in the initial years, I agree! My choice of films weren’t really right, but it’s never too late. Now, I’ve decided not to take up anything that comes my way. I’d rather sit and wait for a nice script to come up.

  • Can we hope to see the five Deol’s, including your sisters together in a film in the near future?
It’s not that easy. It took us nearly three years to come back together after Apne. There’s a lack of good script these days. To script five people in one film and to justify them in the right way is not easy. But, if there's something interesting with a great script, we’ll definitely work together.

  • How do your kids react to your work? Do they accompany you to the sets?
Just like how I love everything that my dad does, my kids love all that I do. Kids always look up to their parents and they love all that their parents do. Yes, they’re there at the sets during their vacations or if I’m shooting in town.

  • What does your wife feel about you as an actor?
She thinks I underestimate myself and that I am capable of doing anything and everything. She really believes in me.

  • Which of your films are closest to your heart?
It has to start from Dillagi, because it was the first time my brother was directing a film and it was the first time I was working with him. Also, Apne is very close to my heart and of course, Yamla Pagla Deewana.

  • What is that one thing you’ve learnt from your dad?
My dad always told me that before you do anything in life you have to be a good human being. If you’re not, no matter what, you’ll never be successful. I think, whatever I am today is the way my mom and dad have brought me up.

  • Which are your forthcoming releases?
I’m currently busy with Jab Jab Fools Mile, it's a mad-cap comedy and also Jat Dehati and Masters which is scheduled for this year.
