Crafty, conniving and cunning, they portray the darker sides of women. But ever wondered why wonderful women like Mita Vasisht, Sudha Chandran, and Nigaar Z Khan play the roles of snobbish vamps on telly serials? These are women with substance who are very different from their reel life characters.
On the occasion of Women's Day we explore the lighter sides of these ladies who play such dark characters onscreen to know more about them.
Mita Vasisht
"My character Trishna in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii was not conceived as a negative character at first. So the plot was twisted a bit to justify the negative shades of my character. In fact, the role of Parvati is too clichéd now. So many virtues make the character a little too saccharine. It is too good to be true in today's world. I am happy with playing Trishna as she is far more honest, self-conscious and straightforward. She does not live in a world of illusion. She gets kicked for being that and that's so true to life! Hence I do not have any guilt feeling involved in playing the negative role. In Swaabhimaan I played Devika who was also similar to Trishna. I used to get so many fan mails saying that they loved the role because it was so down to earth.
But there is one problem in playing the negative characters. People often get confused what to expect when they meet me in person. They believe I am this difficult and intriguing lady and it's a challenge to come closer to me. They forget that I am a normal and common human being and just play my role. It's only a part of my job. It hurts when these people do not stick around for longer when they feel that I am not the same person they see on screen. I too have a softer side, which remains to be explored. I have left a failed marriage behind and am still looking for the right guy in my life. I too would love to be cuddled and feel protected.
Other than acting I am deeply involved in theatres and love playing music. I have learnt Bhupad. I also visit the gym regularly and love to read. I have my parents and a set of women friends who form a very strong support system for me. I used to work for an NGO called Mandala which rescued minor girls from Red light areas and involved them in performing arts and activity so that they could lead a safe and healthy life."
Sudha Chandran
"Ramola Sikand in Kahin Kissi Roz was a landmark in my career. She is a cold blooded murderess but I loved playing it because the grey shades in the character made it interesting from an actor's perspective. Moreover it has brought in name and fame, which is important for any actor, however much you deny it.
I believe that the audience is quite intelligent so that not to mistake my reel life as my real life. My life has been an inspiration to many people. After I got my right leg amputated, I was shattered, but then I gathered all my courage and started fighting back. I felt if Helen Keller could do it, why not me? The way that I overcame my failures and got success has been a message in itself for the new generation.
I come across as a very friendly person - from my spot boys to my co-stars - but I have a strong demarcation line beyond which I guard my privacy strongly. In my personal life I'm very introvert. I open up only before my husband and father and some very close school friends. I think this has strengthened my marital bond.
Other than acting I am very involved with my dance academy, which has 9 branches in Mumbai. I love reading during my leisure hours. And I'm also the acting president of an NGO called National Association for Disabled Entrepreneurs (NADE). I strongly believe that physically disabled people should be financially independent."
