Destiny's child - Dr. Anuj Saxena

Dr. Anuj SaxenaHaving got married just a few days ago, a-very-much-in-love Anuj talks on how he found love in his life.

He is a doctor, an entrepreneur and an actor. Dr. Anuj Saxena popular as Abhay Kapoor in the serial, Kkusum , was a contented businessman till the acting bug bit him and he made his way to crammed studios leaving behind a posh suburban office.

In an exclusive interview with ShaadiTimes, for the first time Anuj holds forth on the love of his life, Ishmit, a Harvard graduate steeped in marketing and finance with whom he tied the knot on 12th February.

Director of Elder Pharmaceuticals and an MBBS doctor, Anuj discovered accidentally that acting gave him job satisfaction and creative fulfilment like nothing else. "It helps me exploit my creativity, thereby allowing me to express myself better, something that practicing medicine didn't give me," he says. Along with his serials Kkusum  and Saara Aakaash  he has also signed on a movie titled Kab Tak.

Doctor to actor
"It has been an exciting and interesting journey. I was content being a doctor and handling the entire family business so acting happened by default. One of my close friends, Vivek Vaswani asked me if I was interested in acting and I agreed just for fun. That's how the serial Aasman se Aage  happened. I realised that I enjoyed being in front of the camera and thus began my affair with acting."

"Initially, I found it hard to adjust to the congested studios and taking orders from my directors, as I was so used to giving orders myself. But gradually I started liking it. Acting gave me the scope to exploit my creative persona, thereby making me more flexible, and taught me to be more patient," says Anuj.

Arranged love
Dr. Anuj Saxena & Ishmit"Ishmit is a very sweet child-woman. Ours is an arranged marriage; our families have known each other for years. The first time I met Ishmit was last May, when my father casually showed me her photograph. But as I was already seeing someone else, I shrugged off the idea. However, after two months I met Ishmit, this time I was single again. After a couple of meetings, I experienced good vibes with her that I had never felt for anyone, before.

"One day very casually I revealed my feelings for Ishmit to my dad. Next, I called my best friend, Manish and told him that I was getting engaged. He couldn't believe it as he thought I would never get married. I got engaged to Ishmit in September, last year."

Someone, somewhere...
Ishmit is from Delhi, so we hardly meet. The only time we spend together is when she comes down to the city. Otherwise, it is a long-distance affair with phone calls and e-mails. I never thought, a guy like me would go in for an arranged marriage, leave alone fall in love with someone from another city. But then, with Ishmit there is a sense of belonging. You are searching for happiness and when you actually find someone with whom you can share yourself, the feeling is unfathomable."

"We are mentally compatible and understand each other very well. I am completely crazy about her smile and her go-getting attitude. I admire the fact that she is an independent and intelligent career woman and yet she is so simple with a keen sense of humour," says a smiling Anuj.

Relationship runs on respect
"Respect is a two-way street! As a couple, it is important to respect each other as well as respect yourself. You can show respect for your partner by simply listening, understanding and accepting your partner for what she is. However, one must never give up a part of himself or herself in a relationship. Relationships are about sharing your true self, not pretending to be the person you think your partner wants you to be. It is important to cherish the togetherness of being a couple, as well as respect your separate identities," Anuj philosophises.

Week-long wedding
"My marriage being the last wedding in my family we had one big celebration. All my colleagues, business associates, cousins and relatives from all over the world came down to Mumbai for one full week. We had the sangeet, haldi and cocktail ceremonies, along with the bachelor's party," says Anuj excitedly.

Lessons from acting
"As a doctor, I am a very methodical person. I like to plan everything in advance. I know exactly where I am going to be six months from now. On the other hand, acting allows me to expand my creativity and express my emotions.

Actors are, after all, people playing different roles and giving dimensions to the different characters. So, I am Abhay Kapoor when I am giving a shot, but after that, I am myself. Abhay takes marriage casually, whereas to me marriage means a life-long bond. However, I enjoyed playing the role of Abhay as I was able to give variations to the character," says Anuj as he signs off.
