A new star on the horizon
Name: Amrita Rao
Age: 21 yrs
Marital status: Single / Never married
Her dream date, first crush, matrimonial plans: Read on
A ShaadiTimes exclusive
Accidents can't be more beautiful
Amrita Rao entered films accidentally. Her tryst with limelight came with an advertisement offer for a chocolate, where she played a married girl waiting to sight the moon to end her Karva Chauth fast. More modelling offers came pouring in and as is the natural progression soon she was a part of the Bollywood brigade.
Childhood fantasies for real
Amrita's first campaign was well-deserving of her down-to-earth attitude. She tells us, "I had no great portfolio. I went with ordinary snaps taken in a photo studio for the audition of a fairness cream! I got through because they looked for performance and not just the pictures. After that, I did about 30 ads in a year." Amrita has no formal training in acting and few will believe that this pretty lass who jiggles hearts when she shakes a leg is not a trained dancer either. "Though I have always been fascinated by this industry, I never thought that I would take it up professionally some day. As we grow up our focus shifts to academics and other things and childhood fantasies step aside. It was destiny that brought me back to where I belonged."

How to charm her
"It all depends on the personality. Looks are not important to me. I strongly believe that your personality can alter your looks. He has to be fabulous in his communication skills and have a good sense of humour too. I don't like people who are stuck up and people who are always arguing. I don't like people who want to be in limelight everywhere and try hard to just to ensure that. I don't like people who are too loud. I am charmed by someone who has a low profile but still stands out because he has that extra spark in him." |

Arrived
Talent cannot be kept under wraps for too long. Farah Khan sighted her in a coffee ad and Shah Rukh Khan narrated Main Hoon Na to her even before she captured hearts in Ishq Vishq . For someone who portrays herself as a young romantic teenager with utmost ease and great conviction, Amrita has never had a boy friend in real life! Thus, Amrita's journey into filmdom and fame began.
Main Hoon Na is just not me
Ask her of all the characters she played which one she relates to and she promptly says, "definitely Ishq Vishq . Sanjana of Main Hoon Na is just not me. Her body language, facial expressions, everything... she is completely different. Of course, it was nice to do something I wouldn't otherwise do."
Back to college
Ishq Vishq was partly shot in Sophia College, Mumbai, where Amrita studied. "It was a great feeling to be shooting in my college. My mom used to come along with me for the shoots and she was more nostalgic because she is also a Sophia alumni. She would tell us about the places they would sit and hang around and the little things they would do."
Performing with the stars
Amrita has been fortunate to work with star icons like Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgun and Sanjay Dutt in an early phase of her career. Ask her who inspired her the most and the bubbly Rao says excitedly, "I got to pick up some qualities from everybody. Ajay is a very normal guy, much unlike a star who keeps a distance and sits in his van between shoots. He makes you very comfortable... no starry airs, whatsoever. Shah Rukh Khan has reached a position where his fan following loves him blindly, and yet he is constantly thinking what's next, what's new... despite his back problems he insists on doing his action sequences himself! He carried Zayed on his back and taught me to play football. I think all these things truly make a star. You know why he is a cut above the rest!"
Romance not on the cards
One wonders why there is no romance in her personal life as yet. She explains, "I was in a girls' school and was very shy of guys. In my college too there was not much scope for interaction with guys." Of course, that is no reason not to have a guy, you persist. "I was a first bencher and a meritorious student. I was on a completely different track and never really had a group where I would interact with guys of my age. Even when I started modelling, it was on a very professional note. My mom has always being along with me and I have felt completely protected..." Interrupt her and ask if she is complaining and she bursts out laughing. "No, it is not a complaint. I am glad that she is with me. Neither did I have an opportunity nor did I ever pursue a relationship."

What sets Amrita's heart singing... Rain: Jo haal dil ka (Sarfarosh) Romance: Zara Zara (Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein) Marriage: Mujhse shaadi karogi (Mujhse Shaadi Karogi) Dreams: Mere dil ko yeh kya ho gaya (Ishq Vishq)

Bowled over
"When I was in school, I had a crush on a cricketer. He doesn't play anymore. Of course, I would not like to name him because you know how it is; six months down the line you feel, 'Oh my God' I was so stupid. I think most of these crushes are like that. My father would always tell me, please, don't fall in love at this age, this is all frivolous."
Prince Charming
What is her kind of guy? "Well, different people bring out different energy levels in you. Some people can bring out the best in you effortlessly, while with others you come out lousy. Thus far, I have come across guys who bring out the best in me alright, but I am not attracted to them. I am just waiting for the right combination to come up. He will be the guy with whom I will feel comfortable and with whom I shall share a good rapport. Even if there is no conversation one should feel fine just being with each other. He has to be a very honest and nice person."
Would he be from the film industry? "In this profession, girls are more committed; if they see someone or are married then they stick to their commitment. Guys just get carried away. So it is very difficult to say whether I will marry an actor. There are a few successful marriages in the industry too, but still..."
One life, one guy
"I feel that the first choice should be the last choice and that is also the reason why I haven't got a boy friend. If I decide to go around with a guy, I would want to marry him otherwise it doesn't make sense. That may take a while; after six months of dating you may find that things are not going your way. You can never tell... it is tough, really tough."
Marriages are forever
"Marriages are forever, they should be forever," she asserts. "I think marriages are falling apart these days because egos have become larger than life. Women have become independent and so they easily walk out of relationships. Earlier the woman would totally depend on the man. There will be ups and downs in marriage and we should deal with it gracefully. Selfishness will leave us lonely at the end of the day."
The road ahead "I don't have a clue what I will do in the future. I hadn't planned to be an actress but now I feel it is the best profession for me. I may start an institute to help newcomers in this industry and guide them through the right channels without getting exploited. They are misguided by people and I hope I will be able to lend them a helping hand." |
