The head on shoulders - Amisha Patel
Amisha Patel must be a newsmaker's delight the way she finds herself in news more often than not.
That she replaced Aishwarya Rai in Amir Khan - starrer The Rising was big news, but what interested the media more was her relationship with film-maker Vikram Bhatt. The rumour mills were in overdrive about the confrontation between their mothers, most likely causing much distaste in Amisha's personal and professional life. The buzz thereafter was that Amisha had left her home and started living with Vikram. How true it is we don't know!
But what we do know is that Amisha shares great on-screen chemistry with her mother, and the duo is appearing in another feature film. Kaho na pyaar hai was her mother's debut too, where she played Hrithik Roshan's mother. But in Sunil Darshan's forthcoming film, Mere Jeevan Saathi , she plays Amisha's mother. Here's Amisha, just for you...
Mere Jeevan Saathi
I am playing an Indian girl with middle-class values. I took it up because it is a very challenging role and you will see that it is so till the last scene. It was a challenge for me to be a part of a two-heroine project for the first time. All the more because I am working with Karishma Kapoor, who is such a wonderful actress, and quite senior to me, too. I felt I would learn a lot from Akshay Kumar as well who has been in the industry for so long.
People may say that this film was long in the making... so was Gadar , but everyone knows how Gadar fared!
The story essentially deals with relationships and that's what interested me a lot. It's about a fatal attraction... not exactly a love triangle... it is about how we can successfully manage relationships and make them work under any circumstances!
Competition with self
I never think about who is doing what. I always think about myself and my work. My looks, my sensibilities and my performance may suit some roles, while it may not suit many others, so I won't be doing all films that come my way. But I feel fortunate that, by God's grace, some very exciting and challenging roles are coming my way. All I know is that I have to give my best performance. If I care more about what others are doing or what they are wearing and eating, then when will I concentrate on my work? So it doesn't matter who is sharing the screen with me and how much is the length of my role... what matters is that I do my best!
Mothers will be mothers
It is a very cute experience to work with my mother again as this time she plays my mother, while earlier she played the hero's mother. She is always a mother even on sets and never a co-artist. She would tell me, 'don't wear this, don't eat this', she would scold me... so it never felt as though we were acting! One funny incident took place when we had just started shooting for the film. In a scene, Mummy had to cook some food with me in the kitchen and Mummy actually started cooking food and told us that she had finished cooking. I had to tell her that you don't really have to cook, it's just acting and then the unit enjoyed the meal cooked by her. With her I don't feel as if it's a set... it feels like home!
Success is a roller coaster
Today you will be up, tomorrow you may be down. I am prepared to take it with a pinch of salt. I am not the only artist who has to face it. When Hrithik came in, everyone said Shah Rukh Khan gaya bechara , but Shah Rukh is still ruling the roost. Therefore, highs and lows are common in any actor's life. Every Friday has a new show to present!
Falsehoods in print
I have always believed that pen is mightier than sword, but it is misused more often than not. Glossies and newspaper write about our personal affairs and relationships without even bothering to verify if it is true. But that's how this industry is and now I have adjusted to it. The magazines sell on the strength of our names and someone there makes his bread and butter at the cost of our reputation! Thankfully mine is a strong and closely-bonded family, so they always support me. My relationship is with my audience and at the end of the day what matters to my fans is my performance. I never cheat them on this front. I do my work with honesty.
Family and friends
I never lie to the media, but of course if there is something that may be damaging to my family member or a friend then I have to be diplomatic. My loyalties are with my family and friends and not with the media. My job as an artist is to please people on the screen and not in the glossies!
