Doing his own thing
Aamir Khan

An actor of many moods. A man who is reticent to talk about himself. A person who believes in living life on his own terms.

ShaadiTimes reviews one of today's icons on two of his latest loves: The Rising and Mughal-E-Azam.

Aamir Khan The beginning:
Aamir Khan's second film (his first was a brief appearance in an art film 'Holi') Qayamat se Qayamat tak not only set the box office on fire, he also became the chocolate-faced lover-boy of an entire generation of swooning girls. Since then he has done a spate of romantic films that have been extremely popular like 'Dil', 'Dil Hai ke Maanta Nahi' and 'Ishq' to name a few. His image as a romantic hero has spurned many wannabes and left many girls asking for more! But slowly and surely, Aamir has moved on to do many diverse roles and proved himself as one of the most versatile performers in Bollywood. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to state that he is one of the most sought after actors in India. He has also won international acclaim with his home production, the Oscar-nominated Lagaan.

The latest:
After three long years, Aamir Khan is back in action. His much-awaited film, Ketan Mehta's The Rising, based on Mangal Pandey's life is in post-production and will release shortly.

Aamir says, "The film's shooting is complete and currently we are doing the post-production. I am happy with the way the film shaped up." In this movie Aamir reunites with his 'Aati kya Khandala' costar Rani Mukherji. It should be well worth the wait!

Aamir's get-up for this film (a pretty prominent moustache and long hair) is fast becoming a fashion statement with his fans. In fact, a major watch brand, Titan, has signed Aamir as their brand ambassador and we can see large hoardings of Aamir in his Mangal Pandey avataar staring down at us throughout the country.

When we ask the man in question how it feels to be a fashion icon, Aamir flashes his ever-charming smile and says modestly, "Thank you for the compliment. I am glad that people like it."

His life and times...
Aamir has recently been in the news for many personal reasons. He has also been the target of a lot of unsavoury gossip.

His split from his wife of many years Reena Dutta raised many eyebrows and the media couldn't stop talking about it. The headlines screamed about his alleged live-in relationship with Kiran Rao, an assistant director to Ashutosh Gowarikar (who directed Lagaan). Recently, the tabloids have claimed that Aamir is married to Kiran. All these controversies gained momentum when the media couldn't get any answers from Aamir himself. All he would say was, "I will not like to speak about my personal life."

After much pressure, Aamir finally told a mainstream newspaper in a recent interview; "I don't speak about my personal life. But let me clarify this aspect - NO, I'm not married."

The future:
Aamir Khan fans have a lot to cheer about! Their favourite actor has recently signed two major projects. The first is a romantic comeback in a Yash Raj film -- Hum Tum director Kunal Kohli will direct this film. Aamir will be back in his romantic mode after a huge hiatus.

Though Aamir didn't divulge this, Kunal Kohli confirmed the news. "Yes, Aamir is doing my film. It is a mature love story."

The excitement begins...
Lastly, Aamir Khan's latest love is what he is really excited about. It is none other than the greatest love and war epic of Indian cinema- Mughal-E-Azam (MEA).

Aamir is excited about the re-release of MEA and especially because the film is now being released in colour and that too with Dolby digital sound!

When asked about his love for MEA, Aamir quickly reiterated, "I have already seen MEA many times and I fell in love with it the very first time I saw it."

He further added with a smile, "It's amazing that so much work has gone into this classic to convert it into colour. The original negative of the film was not available; hence the technicians have worked on a duplicate negative, which in turn made the task doubly difficult. They've separated the mixed mono-track and removed the voices of actors and singers and done a remix after that. Their efforts to restore this magnum opus are truly commendable. I would like today's youngsters to watch it on the big screen - this film is timeless and the re-release will give people of all ages a chance to enjoy it once more. It's a film that will entertain even today. I will surely catch it in the theatre a few more times!"

Aamir further elaborated how films like MEA and master craftsmen like K. Asif and Guru Dutt have always inspired him, "MEA was started in 1944 and after a few years it was stalled. It was restarted in 1951 and took almost nine years to complete. I see no business sense in that -- it was driven purely by passion! The entire tale behind the film is so inspiring. The director and the makers were thinking about nothing but the film. Of course when it released finally, it went on to become the biggest film of all times in Hindi cinema. When Ashutosh Gowarikar (Ashu) approached me with the script of Lagaan, I liked the concept but still rejected the script. I wasn't confident about trying a new idea, I wasn't sure whether it would appeal to the masses and also Ashu was not a known name then. After six months, Ashu came back to me with the same script and I rejected it again. I didn't have the courage to make Lagaan. Then I thought of legendary directors like K. Asif sahab and Gurudutt sahab and realised that they were never scared to take risks and make a film they truly believed in. This thought inspired me so much that I gave Ashu the go-ahead to make Lagaan the third time he approached me. At the most we wouldn't succeed but by then was ready to take the risk."

The rest as they say "is history"!
