It's All About Akriti Kakkar
|
Its' been said that you liked singing since age 5?
I am from Delhi. I was fond of singing and attended Kalyanji-Anandji training school. My singing was admired by a famous audio company as I was giving a live performance for a show. They approached me with a singing assignment – the remake of Rangeela Re. Then I started getting good offers and my parents decided to leave Delhi and settled in Mumbai. I had to start from zero as I was from non-filmy background. My family had to go through loads of problems.
You have entered into Bollywood with the movie Dus? And I must say your song Cham se has got a Cham se response in Bollywood?
(Laughs). I have sung for many movies and the listeners liked all my songs. Like from the movie Chup Chup Ke (Dilwich...),Welcome (Inshallah...), Kismet Connection and Johnny Gaddaar (Title Song). All the songs were adored and were hit too.
Your voice matches Katrina Kaif's personality best? Do you feel the same?
Well! I have sung for Welcome & Namaste London. Personally, I agree. I met her once at the airport and told her that I was the one who sung for Welcome & Namaste London. She was overwhelmed and said that usually actresses don't know whose voice they are miming when they are working in the movie. After that we share a cordial relation.
You have only sung peppy songs so far. Have you taken a stand on this or would you like to change your style?
Of course I would like to try new styles. My two albums - Barbie Doll and High School Musical 2 - were great successes. I like a peppy style but I want to switch to other genres too like emotional and so on.
Any new album?
Now the time has come that listeners should know the other side of Akriti. I am working on a private album where I will not only sing but compose my songs too. Shankar, Eshaan & Loy will do the music score. I am learning the piano from Rani Malikji and Nilesh Mistryji.
Akriti tell us about your favourite music director or singer whom you would love to work with?
R.D Burman, Shankar Jaikishan, Mohd. Rafi and Kishore Da are stalwarts whom I look up to. It was my sheer luck that I got good music directors like Shankar Ehsaan & Loy, Vishal-Shekhar and Himesh Reshammiya who supported me and helped me become successful. I still dream that one day I will work with music directors like A.R. Rahman, M.M. Kareem and Vishal Bhardwaj.
Apart from being a singer you also like acting?
(Laughs) Am I a bad singer that I will turn towards acting? Currently music is my passion and I want to focus on that. It gives me peace of mind and this is what I wanted to be.
Reality Shows are now at a peak? What is your idea about Reality Shows?
Sa Re Ga Ma Pa... was a big break for me, but it did not build my career. I had to do much more after that. I was noticed after the Rangeela Re album in which Dimple Shaw was featured. Reality shows give you platform to showcase your talent. However, your career gets set only once your talent is noticed.
You have sung jingles too?
Yes I have sung jingles in the South. I would love to sing for South films also because there is a stream of melody in South movies.
Your upcoming singing assignments include?
I am singing for movies like Billu Barber, It's My Life, Magical Saturday Night and Hello Darling.
