''I Did Not Direct U, Me Aur Hum For Sermonising''
Says, Ajay Devgan
|
To such people who analyze everything I simply want to ask, "Where exactly did all the romance disappear to? Why do we find it so difficult to accept that two souls can touch each other deeply quite suddenly?" I believe in the concepts of love and a 'happy married life', which is why these are important aspects of my film.
A lot of people raise questions about the institution of marriage. When problems arise, they also blame the institution of marriage for them. Yes, problems do arise in most marriages and relationships and it is natural to be hassled by them.
'U, Me Aur Hum' is a romantic movie but there is no definition of love in the movie. Love is such that it cannot be defined in a new manner in every film. The movie has a few dialogues of mine which say a lot. For instance, a particular dialogue, "Just as you require passion to find your love, similarly you need passion to nurture it".
I believe that if you can always hold on to your passion, you will never face problems in life. Everyone has problems in life, but remember that no problem is bigger than life itself.
The bitter truth is that you have to work hard to make every relationship a success and keep it that way. And if the basis of the relationship is love, then the effort comes naturally and brings happiness with it. Lack of effort is the main reason why any relation develops cracks. Every problem has a solution but most people focus on the problem itself instead of focusing on the solution. So blaming the institution of marriage for your problems is not quite fair, the problem lies with the individuals involved.
My film 'U, Me Aur Hum' is the story of how a boy makes a girl fall in love with him, gets married and then how he makes his marriage work. It is a very real story and you don't get the feeling that anything in the movie is impossible or make-believe. Everyone will be able to identify with it. I believe that if anyone becomes closer to his / her family after seeing my film, then I will have succeeded in what I set out to do.
Honestly, the reason behind this movie is not to lecture people or give them advice, nor have I made the film to flaunt my abilities as a director. I am not even trying to get people to alter their thinking or the way they handle their relationships. My main aim is to entertain my audience and give them their money's worth.
And yes, along with being entertained, if people do believe that they have found the secret to making their relationships successful, then that will definitely be an added reward!
On Kajol...
I am fortunate to get the opportunity to direct an actress such as Kajol in my first film itself. Every director wishes to work with the best. Kajol is a complete and accomplished actor; there is no doubt about that. This also made my job that much easier.
Apart from that, she is also the producer of the film. She always made sure that she understood even the tiniest aspects of her character before giving a shot; another reason why my work became so easy. Getting her to act in the film was also not difficult. You see, the story was being written at home and from time to time Kajol also provided some inputs. She was thus involved with the character right from the start and it was only natural that she plays the part.
ST: Have you shot the film, 'U, Me Aur Hum' abroad?
AD: The answer is No. The majority of the film is shot aboard a cruise liner called Star Cruises, which we had a lot of fun doing. Other portions were shot on set in Filmistan Studios in Mumbai.
As an actor, I have worked with the most accomplished directors, but I don't think their style of work has influenced my film. Every director has his own graph, a unique style and their own body of work. I don't compare myself to anyone else.
