ST: How did you decide that it was the right time for you to get into direction?
AD: Honestly speaking, I don't know about the right or wrong time, but I just knew that I had a story that I wanted to tell - a story that I believe in and which has touched my heart. Actually, I had an idea in my mind for quite some time. One fine day I started putting the idea down on paper and a fabulous story started emerging.
As the story began to take shape, I realized that if I wanted to tell the story like I saw it through the medium of film, then I would have to direct the film myself. If I had asked someone else to direct the film, it may not have turned out exactly how I wanted it to.
People think that I had to face a lot of problems while directing the film, but nothing of the sort happened. What they forget that I was an assistant director before I became an actor. From the age of 8-9 years old, I have been visiting film sets with my father and have learnt a great deal about editing.
I have also worked with Shekhar Kapoor in the capacity of his assistant and thus know a lot about direction. Apart from this, I believe that if the director has a strong and clear vision, and has a great team working with him, then problems should not be an issue at all.
ST: Why this story only?
AD: I can give not just one but many reasons, the main one being that it is a story with an immensely positive outlook. People today have become quite sick emotionally. Instead of being filled with hope, they are filled with cynicism. Everything in life is being viewed with a negative outlook, especially love, marriage, family, relationships, and feelings.
So, to fill people with hope and try and make them feel positive about life - that is why I was so enthusiastic to produce this film.
In today's scientific world, people need a specific reason to do anything. Even where love is concerned, people spend hours wondering whether or not they will be compatible with the other person, and even hormones and sexual relations are being deliberated over.
